Maritime Gloucester Sees Construction As Educational Opportunity

“On Thursday afternoon, with an autumn sun glistening off the serene harbor waters and a Coast Guard helicopter taking off from the neighboring USCG Station Gloucester, about a dozen workers moved through the site”, wrote Mike Springer in his article featured in the Gloucester Times about National Grid’s latest harbor cleanup project.

Despite the disturbance to its pier, Maritime Gloucester has already begun to develop educational programs bringing to light the historical issue of contaminants. The museum will utilize the project as a “real-time teaching tool.” As Tom Balf, Maritime Gloucester Executive Director, was quoted in the article “The impacts are what we make of them; namely educational and teaching opportunities to learn about contamination, risk, cleanup, and jobs.”

This project has been in the planning stages for over a decade and Charter is happy to play a role in this cleanup operation. You can learn more about the National Grid project to remediate the former Gloucester Gas Light Co.’s plant site here.
